École Mill Bay wins BC Green Games
April 17, 2012
École Mill Bay is a BC Green Games winner for the second year in a row! École Mill Bay is the only elementary school to win on Vancouver Island.
After learning about local and global issues related to water use and conservation, the Roots and Shoots Club presented their message on the importance of clean water, responsible water use and water conservation in a fun, short video and artwork. The group will receive $1,000 to sustain or begin environmental initiatives. The club is planning on inviting in local environmental experts to participate in some hands on science activities, enriching their learning in the area of environmental sciences.
The Club’s Water Warriors video will be presented to the school as part of the Earth Day celebrations, which will raise funds to build a clean water source in Zambia and collect donations to the local food bank. Local Area Director Gerry Giles and David Slade, from Drillwell, will be attending the celebrations and will answer the question, "Why do we need to conserve water in the South Cowichan?"
The École Mill Bay Roots and Shoots Club is made up of about 40 dedicated students in Grades 3 through 5. They meet each week at lunch to learn about and take action on environmental and humanitarian issues.
École Mill Bay is working hard to be a "green" school by being conscious of its waste. In addition to their composting program, the school is continuing work on a large, year-round “teaching” vegetable garden as a living resource at École Mill Bay to teach students where their food comes from. Vegetables from the garden won four prizes at the 2011 Cobble Hill Fall Fair. Students used fall vegetables to make soup that was enjoyed by all.

The PAC was very fortunate to have the Principal of Cowichan Secondary School, the French Immersion teacher, and 3 amazing students come to our last meeting to talk with us about French Immersion in the valley.
We made a video of what they had to say as well as the answers they had for our parent's questions. The topics included what the students have gained over their years in the program, what French Immersion looks like at the highschool level, the future of Cowichan Secondary, and more.
We hope you enjoy watching the video. Please bear with the slightly shaky bits of filming!
Hopefully everyone has had a relaxing summer and is looking forward to an exciting year at École Mill Bay Elementary!
Every parent is a member of the PAC and is encouraged to become involved. New ideas are always welcome and regardless of how much time you have available, or your skills, there is something everyone can do to help support the school community.
Together we can continue to enhance our children’s education by working to create a rich learning environment and a vibrant school community. We hope this guide will give you some information about the École Mill Bay PAC and how you can be involved in your child’s school. Thank you in advance for your contribution.
Let’s teach our children that we can all make a difference!
École Mill Bay started in 2005, with 26 Kindergarten students at Elsie Miles School. The school moved to the present location at 3175 Cobble Hill Road in Mill Bay for school year 2006/2007, with 54 Kindergarten and Grade One students. There are currently 251 students registered in Kindergarten through Grade Six. École Mill Bay’s Principal is Lise Pagé.
The École Mill Bay library features a collection of both English and French books that parents and teachers have worked hard to put together since opening in 2006. The school also has a computer lab of 30 Macintosh Computers, as well as smart boards in many classrooms to introduce the students to the possibilities of learning through technology. Students take part in music classes twice a week and physical education every day, including a school run every Friday. École Mill Bay students have the opportunity to develop relationships with other French Immersion students in the Cowichan Valley through pen pal exchanges and cultural events. Field trips often include swimming, skating, exploration at the farm or beach, salmon runs and museums. For more information, or to arrange a school tour, please call the school at (250) 743-5504.
